<br />
I cannot believe we are three weeks into 2012 already! So far the year has been good to me: my new project is underway, we visited Manchester to see the lovely <a href="http://www.sleepingdog.be/" target="_blank">Sleepingdog</a> and <a href="http://www.awvfts.com/" target="_blank">A Winged Victory for the Sullen</a>, took a small trip to <a href="http://www.roundhaypark.org.uk/tropical-world-leeds/" target="_blank">Tropical World</a> and snapped this awesome reflection of a crocodile lazing in the water; I worked as a "supporting artiste" on the set of a new BBC TV show (I shan't tell you which, as to be honest, my acting skills are non-existent so they will probably edit me out of all the shots! But I still got paid £75 for the day, hurrah) and tomorrow I shall be visiting Liverpool to see the current exhibitions at the <a href="http://www.tate.org.uk/liverpool/" target="_blank">Tate Liverpool</a> and <a href="http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/walker/" target="_blank">Walker Art Gallery</a>.<br />
<br />
I seem to have become increasingly panicked by how quick the days are passing, especially in these dark winter months. To remedy this, I have started trying to get out of bed at 6am (rather than my usual 8.30), and even the extra hour or so (after I have had my obligatory 2 cups of coffee and burned awake my retinas with my macbook) really makes a difference to how much I get done in the day. I have also not drunk any alcohol for almost four weeks, meaning I no longer get that post-drink laziness that I usually suffer from. I am hoping that these new changes can continue, alongside my resolution to read more fiction. I have almost finished my second novel of 2012- I am not sure that I even read one last year. I seem to be more drawn to medical text books, fancy art tomes and biographies, but I have really enjoyed making extra time to get stuck into a story. If you have any good book recommendations, please get in touch!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-48448447997285043942011-11-26T22:40:00.007+00:002011-11-26T22:47:08.631+00:00walk.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86_hbyxjQbFWesUFSN1T8Atr9ExXcqna0r60IQ3-TL5KHTR2VrWC8XvhQVWzwXvjEFTiajj69MmY8iN6gyZZp2UclKT3t83pi7Ce2GBLj3bqVDP2f8j0v7OoW1dZF9kq4NayFn80IaUx2/s1600/goldenacre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86_hbyxjQbFWesUFSN1T8Atr9ExXcqna0r60IQ3-TL5KHTR2VrWC8XvhQVWzwXvjEFTiajj69MmY8iN6gyZZp2UclKT3t83pi7Ce2GBLj3bqVDP2f8j0v7OoW1dZF9kq4NayFn80IaUx2/s640/goldenacre.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

</span></i></div><div style="text-align: center;">One thing we said we would like to do once we got our own place was to build a home darkroom. Whilst I am at college this is not so much of an issue - they have plenty of equipment to use free of charge & there is always somebody about to give you advice on any issues. But this summer, with college closed & no access to a darkroom, it showed me just how difficult it would be for me to practice after next year. Looking at the prices for having films professionally developed & printed are quite simply extortionate. I don't understand how people can afford between £17 - £35 ... <i>per 120 film</i> (Kodak prices). I would much rather do it myself anyway. So now I have 3 or 4 rolls sitting around, waiting to be developed next week. I really didn't take as many photographs as I had planned to this month. I like to shoot, process & analyse before I move on to the next roll - to see where I am going wrong, figure out any hitches with the camera & so on, before I continue shooting blindly. But from now on I have no time for such cautiousness. So I will read every book I can find on the subject & start saving small bits of money to accrue the necessary equipment </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-82695660648751829942011-09-09T16:55:00.000+01:002011-09-09T16:55:29.661+01:00<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Century Gothic';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 12px;"><br />

During the days and weeks following the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26th, 1986, the local population were evacuated by Soviet military, and they had to leave behind all their belongings. The former homes, meeting places and recreation centres were declared contaminated territory – in fact, they will remain uninhabitable for thousands of years.</i></div><div class="style9" style="color: black; font-family: 'Century Gothic'; font-size: 12px;"><i>Two decades after the disaster, Jacob Kirkegaard visited the exclusion area with his recording equipment. His approach was inspired by Alvin Lucier's work “I am sitting in a room” [1970]. While sitting in a room, Lucier recorded his own voice reciting a text which he then played back in the room. He repeated this process over and over again until the different layers of his voice began to merge into a constant drone. Kirkegaard didn’t record his own voice but the voice of the room itself. He put up a microphone and a speaker, started the recording and left. After ten minutes, he returned, stopped the recording and played it back into the same space. With each new layer, the subtle sounds of the room were enlarged and deepened until t<span class="style12" style="color: black; font-family: 'Century Gothic';">hey finally turned into one humming sound with many overtones.</span></i></div><div class="style9" style="color: black; font-family: 'Century Gothic'; font-size: 12px;"><i>For the visual representation of the four rooms, Kirkegaard explored a variety of techniques, working with layers, overexposure and video feedback, that can be understood as analogous to his acoustical method."</i></div><br />

The brief set for us claims we need no conclusion, but at the same time, I need a path to follow for my brain to work effectively.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Autumn is in the air; our apples are almost ripe (such satisfaction is gained from the simple act of having an apple release itself from the tree into the palm of your hand with no resistance) and pies and chutneys are already being made, our basil is sprouting incredible smelling leaves, the baby corn has grown to past my hip and I just discovered blackberries & raspberries twisting their way through our hedge. Oh, how I love this little house & our garden. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I won't post about it them just yet- I don't want to jinx it after so much agonizing- but I think it could be really interesting. I love this little scene that was cut</span><span style="font-size:85%;"> from July's new film <span style="font-style: italic;">The Future</span>. In the interview (also over at Nowness) July says of it: "This scene was meant to make it clear that Sophie was struggling against distraction, after losing time on YouTube—we all know how alluring these distractions are, and here we are seeing her attempting to take charge". Before I had my ideas figured out, I found little distractions everywhere: the house needed cleaning (I scrubbed for 7 hours one day), rearranging my bookshelves, CV writing & job hunting (#epicfail), house guests and vets trips and of course, the internet and it's seemingly infinite grip. But now that I am really excited about the possibilities of my project, the small things aren't so distracting anymore.<br /></span></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-60764050259182902662011-07-22T09:38:00.000+01:002011-07-27T14:44:12.897+01:00Gizeh Records: Silent Bells Tour<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Three amazing bands on Gizeh Records playing three UK shows, November 2011 ♥</span><br /><img src="http://www.gizehrecords.com/uploads/5/5/8/2/5582438/3144010.jpg?907" style="margin: 0pt; border-width: 1px; width: 385px; height: 273px;" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorderBlack" /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">see <a href="http://www.gizehrecords.com/silent-bells-tour.html">here</a> for more information & to buy tickets<br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;">p.s. you can still listen to the Winter Sampler <a href="http://gizehrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sampler-winter-2010">here </a><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;">& check out the <a href="http://soundcloud.com/gizeh">Gizeh Records SoundCloud</a> where you can find new solo material from Richard Knox's new project Of Thread and Mist along with many more beautiful tracks</span><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-44278247004965227062011-07-15T10:47:00.001+01:002011-07-18T15:52:14.855+01:00As much as I adore our new house and wouldn't want to leave Alfred whilst he is settling in (he's getting cheekier by the day!), plus the fact that I have <span style="font-style: italic;">no money</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">whatsoever</span>, I really want to go on a little trip. Just a few days out of Leeds- I always feel more refreshed and inspired to work after a small break. I have been finding it difficult to put any of my recent ideas into action & maybe some foreign surroundings would do me some good. I want to go to Amsterdam again and walk down the canals, craning my neck to look up at all the wonky old merchant houses, stopping to take pictures every two minutes. Visit the <a href="http://www.poezenboot.nl/?taal=uk">cat boat</a> sanctuary, where you pay a donation & play with the rescue cats (I really want one of these <a href="http://www.poezenboot.nl/producten.php?id=1">awesome shirts</a>), visit the <a href="http://www.foam.org/">Foam</a> photography gallery, spend hours browsing through fancy art books that I can't afford, eat tasty/cheap falafel and Wok to Walk box meals, visit a few of my favourite stores (including & especially <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.hetgroteavontuur.nl/index_en.html">this one</a>) and sit in an old bar sipping beer, watching the cyclists fly past, hands free, looking super stylish.<br /><div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px; padding: 0pt; line-height: 1.6em; text-align: center;font-size:0.8em;"><span style="margin: 0pt;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><br />Ah well. Here's to wishing.<br /><br />Instead I think I will read my books (I have three on the go at once), play with Alfred, learn to make dyes out of onion skins, sew sew sew & make a tasty dinner. Oh, and Paris in September! A break to look forward to.<br /><br />One of my favourite photographs ever, from our travels last year</span><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxXsZHDokrVat8jTex4bVCRBroz_kslV16MJJhc1CQ-92DKkWH7vH_b36chbpnYH2imH9LEKqPheBnmrQ10LTHZldVOmNncv_LLjaEMc7yGFxXKmzjezTAeJ-yyVGfU2gDLe1s1tAULwk_/s1600/3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 362px; height: 321px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxXsZHDokrVat8jTex4bVCRBroz_kslV16MJJhc1CQ-92DKkWH7vH_b36chbpnYH2imH9LEKqPheBnmrQ10LTHZldVOmNncv_LLjaEMc7yGFxXKmzjezTAeJ-yyVGfU2gDLe1s1tAULwk_/s400/3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629529470785225698" border="0" /></a><span style="font-style: italic;font-size:78%;" >my sweetheart, Amsterdam</span><br /></div><p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-86438333095504076832011-07-14T17:06:00.001+01:002011-07-14T17:08:27.436+01:00Sir Alfred<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px; padding: 0pt; font-size: 0.8em; line-height: 1.6em;"><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/5936859073/" title="Sir Alfred"><img style="width: 340px; height: 263px;" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6015/5936859073_eaee788d96.jpg" alt="Sir Alfred by littleruins" /></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin: 0pt;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/5936859073/">Sir Alfred</a>, a photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/">littleruins</a> on Flickr.</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;font-size:100%;" >settling in nicely...</span></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-43514849196671515092011-07-13T15:16:00.001+01:002011-07-13T15:25:44.002+01:00Off we go, into the woods.<div style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px; padding: 0pt; font-size: 0.8em; line-height: 1.6em; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/5933851108/" title="dark house"><img style="width: 358px; height: 342px;" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6024/5933851108_1750c41783.jpg" alt="dark house by littleruins" /></a><br /><span style="margin: 0pt;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/5933851108/">dark house</a>, a photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52253451@N06/">littleruins</a> on Flickr.</span><span style="font-style: italic;font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:78%;"><br /></span></span></div><p></p><p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6881068502237023199.post-29266914259361460102011-07-11T18:47:00.000+01:002011-07-13T11:15:43.983+01:00<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" >Say hello to Alfred!</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzocMH4jTyHo6snYDjuSpaX7A8U-_YWvxCVk8QkaFKBZLGAASoJi6qTuJO-3WDWZJXqaG6vW-q39lrGoX1VSRko3NlhU8nICmmXXFVymGsrhF3I2M05qiLCh6F3OOb0Pc3ZQdg_k9LwvS/s1600/280927_10150260152033586_737443585_7443715_5789001_o.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzocMH4jTyHo6snYDjuSpaX7A8U-_YWvxCVk8QkaFKBZLGAASoJi6qTuJO-3WDWZJXqaG6vW-q39lrGoX1VSRko3NlhU8nICmmXXFVymGsrhF3I2M05qiLCh6F3OOb0Pc3ZQdg_k9LwvS/s400/280927_10150260152033586_737443585_7443715_5789001_o.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628153043613755490" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">This beautiful tabby cat will be coming to live with us tomorrow. So excited to give such a sweet little cat the life he deserves! Alfie was abandoned by his original owners and left homeless for more than six months, before being fostered & nurtured back to health by the wonderful <a href="http://www.rayofhopeanimalrescue.org/">Ray of Hope</a> animal rescue. We took a little trip to the pet hotel (!) he was staying in today (here he is, on his cat house), and though he was obviously perturbed by the excitable poodles-on-heat in a nearby kennel & therefore a little bit grumpy, we fell in love with him.<br />Counting down the hours til he arrives!<br /><span style="font-size:100%;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />My Love For You // Lisa Congdon</span><br /></span></span></span><span style="opacity: 1;font-size:130%;" class="image-wrapper current" ><a class="advance-link" rel="history" href="http://www.lisacongdon.com/paintings.html#7" title="Bear"> <img style="width: 355px; height: 354px;" src="http://www.lisacongdon.com/images/bear.jpg" alt="Bear" /></a></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size:130%;">The ever-inspiring contemporary arts blog</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><a href="http://www.myloveforyou.typepad.com/">my love for you is a stampede of horses</a>, curated by Megan O'Toole, have began recording a series of podcasts, the latest of which features awesome illustrator <a href="http://www.lisacongdon.com/index.html">Lisa Congdon.</a> You can listen to it <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/my-love-for-you-is-stampede/id448839643">here</a> & add it to your iTunes library/iPod for </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" >free</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:130%;">.)</span><br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Belly of Flea</span><br /></span></span></span></span></span><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BellyofFlea?ref=pr_shop_more"><img style="width: 376px; height: 55px;" src="http://ny-image0.etsy.com/iusb_760x100.8544240.jpg" alt="" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span></span></span>More awesome organic/earth-friendly news from <a href="http://allysonandjeremy.blogspot.com/">Allyson Mellberg Taylor & Jeremy Taylor</a>: The impressively productive sweetheart-duo recently set up an Etsy shop where they are selling their handmade inks & paints, made from materials that won't cost the earth.
